I have a VP I/O (4.3 GL) and noticed some threaded plugs installed in the exhaust elbow while I was winterizing the engine. Just wondering what these plugs are for and whether I should be doing anything with them during the winterization process or other maintenance procedures.

The elbows on my setup look more or less the same as the one here: http://greatlakesskipper.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/thumbnail/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/3/3/33683-2-lg_1.jpg

There is one threaded plug on the top (not the temperature sensor location) and a couple or so plugs on either side. I see that the larger port on the engine-facing side of each elbow has a fitting with a hose running up to the flame arrestor, presumably this is a EGR or warm air return to help the engine warm up faster, but not sure what the other plugs are for.

No EGR on marine engines as of yet (thank God)...that might be for some kind of anti-reversion system that Volvo used to keep engines from sucking water up the exhaust when slowing down off plane...I recall reading about it but did not know how it was plumbed....something to reduce the vaccum in the exhaust....
