Post subject:  fuel pump replacement

i have a 2001 VP 5.7 with 2 bbl carb on it. Its been tuned up but backfires when at 3000 rpm under load (running) only. Ii think it may be my fuel pump (fuels good and so is the screen). I have changed fuel pumps on cars but not with electronic ignition. I have easy access to the pump, is it to bad to change myself or is it a job for a VP mechanic?

when the engine is running in gear (3000 rpms running on plane), it backfires periodically. It runs poorly but functional, but we noticed a fuel odor. When I opened the carb.cover after running, I noticed a small fuel pool on the intake manifold, I assume is fuel pooling from the backfiring. The boat idles fine and runs in neutral fine (tested briefly up to 2800 rpms). When I got home, took the fuel filter off, fuel looked excellent no water. I also removed the fuel filter screen on the carb and it looked clean.

do you see fuel in the orange/red hose from the pump to the carb? stuck carb float? doesn't sound safe...don't leave home without your flame guard secure

its getting plenty of fuel to idle and to run smoot reved up in neutral, something is wrong when im running it under load, causing it to backfire. Maybe the fuel pump cant supply enough fuel when its running? I'm having it checked out today by a marina shop that said they could look at it the next day or so (my usual mechanic couldnt get to it for 2-3 weeks). its a 5.7GS 2000 VP engine, so i believe it only has one fuel pump.
