Hi guys,

saturday evening, the overheating alarm went on and I've shutted down my engine few seconds later. I've bought my boat in August 2011 (so it's still under warranty), but my dealership told me that Volvo won'T cover a overheating engine!!! He told me to call my insurance company...

He has not inspected the engine, the water pump or the thermostat yet, but I mean, it's not 2 years old! What do you guys think and suggest to do?

My engine is a Volvo 4.3 SX-i (225 HP).

Thanks a lot guys!

What did your temp gauge read when the alarm sounded? If you shut it down as soon as the alarm sounded, you probably averted any damage (that's what the alarm is for). Next would be finding the reason it overheated, if it wasn't a false alarm.

Well its hard to say, I have never owned a new boat with a warrantee, but I'd let the Volvo tech look at it and see what they find. In a boat that new, there isn't much that could have gone wrong except for wear on the impeller, a loose drive belt for the impeller or front circulating pump, things of that nature. Did the boat ever suck up weeds, eel grass or sand in the cooling intakes? That's a common way for even new boats to overheat and it can also toast the impeller. Those alarms are set to go off at about 200*F and that's not really hot enough to hurt it as long as you shut it down promptly. Keep in mind the same engine in a Chevy truck runs at 195-210 routinely.
My son's 2012 Suzuki outboard overheated the first time he used it (sucked up seaweed) but he shut it right off and and it was fine the whole rest of last summer. We ran it yesterday and it ran great with a good strong tell-tale stream (the stream that shoots out the back of an OB to let you know the water pump is pumping). Have you tried it since the overheat?

Having owned a boat with a VP warranty, it's a warranty not insurance. The warranty does not cover maintenance or wear items. It excludes virtually the whole cooling system except circulation pump if I remember correctly. Impeller, water hoses, fittings are considered wear items and are not covered. It did cover my trim pump motor, thank god. That sucker would have been $1200.

If an impeller broke or a hose broke and caused the overheating, that's not covered by warranty. You need to discover the cause of the overheat. 99% chance you either sucked something up or the impeller broke. I wouldn't worry about damage if you shut it down right when the alarm went off.

So, if it's the water pump or the impeller, it's not covered... but then, I can claim it to my insurance company, no?

If an impeller broke on you that fried your motor, yes that's an insurance claim.

I agree that the motor is probably fine after a single overheat and immediate shutdown. I would think any repair would be far less money out of pocket than your insurance deductible, assuming it is something along the lines of an impeller, belt, hose, etc. that failed and can be easily replaced.
