Thanks for posting this, the cost of replacing these rams is crazy expensive and it's great to know that there is a much cheaper and better alternative. |

The seller also sent a pin wrench (crap but it worked) and detailed instructions so in hindsight Im happy to pay the 140.00 for his efforts |

As you know the marine industry isn't always geared toward the DIY guy and they would rather you pay big $$ to replace something rather than service a cheap set of o rings. |

Got mine from him too, as no other option here in the UK (Apparently). Expensive, when you look at what you're actually paying for! But have done the job with no apparent leaks.... Pin wrench is a waste of metal though, bit of a toy. Straight in the bin! |

I bought a spanner wrench on ebay for $22 (good one too!) and buy the OEM Volvo Penta/OMC seal kits for $33. In the future, now that you know how to do it, dont pay $140 every again!!! |

I'm having some routine maintenance done on my outdrive (1999 268 VP DPSM) and mechanic said I need a new trim cylinder ($500+). After checking here, it seems they can be rebuilt...I have a couple questions 1) is it as easy as it looks? 2) does entire cylinder need to be remove to rebuild? 3) anyone know where to find OEM kit that someone mentioned? I couldn't find it 4) anything special I should know? Thanks! |

It is pretty simple once you remove the spanner nut, however removing the nut can be difficult if you don't have the right pin wrench. The pin wrench that came with the kit did not cut it, I had a machinist friend of mine make a pin wrench for me. Also, be aware that the female threads of the cylinder for the hydraulic lines may have boogered up since they are soft aluminum, I had my friend retap them since I was worried about screwing them up. |

FYI: You can rebuild it right on the boat i did, just get the right tool -spanner wrench to take it apart. |

Just make sure you look at the cylinder rod carefully before you order any parts. If the rod is pitted or scratched anywhere, then the new seal kit is not going to last. My 2007 Merc (which lives in the water year round) were not in the best of condition so I went ahead and got new trim cylinders from nuwavemarine. I did not want to take the chance on rebuilding just to have to replace later. |
