So, curious if anyone has had a personal experience with a faulty fuel pump. I'm trying to figure out if it's something I can replace in my own backyard. It's a volvo penta 4.3gi 1998.

You might look at youtube. There is a video for changing it on a 5.0 v8. It can be done. Just look it over, and be sure to fill the filter with gas and turn the key on several times to prime the fuel pump.

Yes, can be changed - is it the Low pressure, or High pressure pump, as you have both....

Changed mine last fall. It was starting to fail so I did some preventive maintenance. Found one online for about $700. It was a fairly easy job.

I changed mine this spring there is one fuel supply line from the tank. a high pressure line to the engine and a return line. plus two water cooler lines and the elect. plug pretty easy because it was on the top front of my engine Doug Russel marine had the best price for the whole thing you can use a fuel pressure gauge to tell if its the high or low pressure pump I just bit the bullet and replaced the whole thing

It looks like you might have the "pre fuel cell" setup being a 1998. Does your fuel pump look similar to this setup?
http://www.volvopentastore.com/Fuel-Pump/dm/cart_id.698424935--session_id.649462495--store_id.366--view_id.776028 or http://www.volvopentastore.com/Vapor-Separator-Tank/dm/cart_id.698424935--session_id.649462495--store_id.366--view_id.776029
Hopefully this is the setup you have because it looks cheaper and easier than the problematic fuel cells a bunch of us have dealt with.

With some precautionary measure and some basic hand tools you should have no problem changing this yourself. A Sealock manual should cover this repair step by step to guide you

Excellent! How did you diagnose the relay?
