Hey guys,
I have a 2003 90hp Johnson OB.
Loaned it to my Nephew last weekend and I get it out today and the speedometer is not working.

I looked on the transom and there is not a pick up tube.

Looks like a connection of a tube to the backside of the motor above the water line at the swival joint. On the back side of the lower unit, there is a small hole in the casing that I suspect is the pickup for this connection above.

The hole looks like it's plugged with debris. The hole is maybe 3/16" in diameter. Anyone know the best way to clear this? I could poke something in it, but will that just wash debris further up line? Can you disconnect the top part and run a small wire down?

Any information would be appreciated. Picking up the engine manual tomorrow at the shop. I'll see if it has any information as well.

Thanks,
Doug

When you say "backside", do you mean the part that faces towards the bow? (I would call that the "front") Then, yes, this is the hole. It is usually less than 1/8" diameter.

You can disconnect the hose (at the engine, or at the speedometer) and blow back through it (by mouth, or with compressed air, but limited to about 25 psi so you don't blow the hose). At the same time, you could poke around in the hole with a very small wire...like a wire baggy-tie with the plastic removed.

Apparently, your Nephew is not doing a good job avoiding weeds/debris.

Thanks much.
Yep, nephew got into some debris and got a small limb wedged into the prop.
Stopped the engine cold and he had to be towed to the marina and they had to cut it out.
Broke the trim tab for adjusting for prop wash.
I was worried about the boat, but it ran fine for him next 2 days.
I checked it out today for a few hours and everything is working fine.

He did have the tab replaced and fixed my back seat. The back seat would flip you into the floor if you sat on the edge. Evidently the plastic lip was bent and a corner finally broke off. He used some thicker whaler board material and made a replacement part. He also extended it further so it's real solid now.

Luckily I checked the gas level before I headed out. It was full when I loaned it to him and empty now :-). He was suppose to return it full. No wonder he said don't worry about my next month storage fee lol.

Thanks again, I'll get this fixed this weekend.

Best regards,
Doug

He owns the storage yard :-)
Really good guy, only 2 years younger than me.
He's a single father and had 2 teenagers for the weekend.
I am sure he just got busy with the girls and forgot.

I went to clear the Pitto tube yesterday and the elbow that goes into the top hole just broke right off.
$2 part and $5 shipping lol

Hopefully I get all the debris out.

Doug
