Post subject:  What Replaced Volvo Penta Full Synthetic SAE 30 Engine Oil?

Hi, I'm sure this has been talked about, but I just found out that this oil is no longer available. I have a 2006 Volvo Penta 5.7GXi/DP 320hp engine in my Four Winns boat. I have always used Volvo Penta Full Synthetic gasoline engine oil SAE 30. What oil is recommended for its replacement? Thanks, Ray

Volvo marketed their SAE 30w Synthetic domestically as they have a contract with Amsoil. The Volvo Marine is a rebrand of one of Amsoil's stand offerings. Overseas Volvo Synthetic is a rebrand of Mobil-1 15-w 50 Extended Performance bottled at the ExxonMobil facility in Gravashon, France.

Amsoil has discontinued their SAE 30w synthetic, so Volvo went with the 10W-40 Amsoil offering, re-badged as Volvo Penta 10W-40 in the fall of 2011 IIRC.

A classic "slip up" that 230Mike caught a few years ago. This was actually on the Volvo Penta website, you can see the "Amsoil" on the gallon jug.

Thanks for the replies........ In all likelihood I'll make sure I get a brand SAE 30 synthetic oil. Mobil 1 seems to be a popular choice. Thanks for showing the gallon size "Amsoil" container. Certainly proves the point of who manufactured the Volvo Penta oil. I did get an email from Volvo Penta below; Thanks again, Ray :?

Hello Mr. Sherman,
The recommended oil now is 10W40 full synthetic.
It is basically a superior oil providing a wider range of protection to the engine on different operating temperatures.

Kind regards,

As stated by the Cap'n, find a quality synthetic 15w50.
You can even use Mercruiser's Synthetic Blend 25w40 with no problems.
Ultimately, this is a small block Chevy, with a roller cam setup...
Using a 0w30 will cause oil pressure issues in a marine environment and I strongly suggest you consider an alternative.

My stockpile of VP/Amzoil straight 30W will run out in another year or two, at which point it'll be Mobil 1 for me.

I use Royal Purple HPM 10w40 in my Merc 6.2.
I wanted to make sure I used a Marine grade oil as the operating conditions are a lot different between a car and a boat.
Just my opinion.

I did some research on this topic and what I found was that most engine marinizers recommended lighter weight oils only if the engine had an engine oil cooler. If not then typically they recommended a heavier weight straight weight like straight 40 or 30; a Syn 10/40 like Volvo does, or the Merc 25/40. So if you have an engine that does not have an engine oil cooler then stick with those choices. Personally I use the Merc conventional 25/40 in my old '88 4.3. I did an engine oil analysis on mine with the Merc oil and it held up just as well as the straight 40 I used to use. The 25/40 gives better cold starts though.

What ever you use consider doing a Blackstone analysis. I've done it on the engine twice and on the out drive oil once. It takes the guess work out of it...

Last oil change on my Four Winns, I used this synthetic marine oil (10w-40) - it is on sale now, you can get a case of 12 liters for less than $45, I paid about $35 more for the same case two years ago: Maxima CS14901-12PK PWC Marine 4T 10W-40 Engine Oil - 1 Liter Bottle, (Case of 12)

I use Merc 25/40 and have had no issues in my 4.3's.

Lots of different replies..... I'm believe I'll go with a full synthetic in either 30w or the 10W40. Hmmm...... decisions....... decisions. Thanks, Ray :?

I know this will create some heat, but depends on how long do you plan on keeping the boat?
If a year or two, any decent oil such as Shell Rotella 25w40 will do fine and be no problem and will be cheaper at Walmart.
If you plan on keeping for a long time, I would recommend the royal purple Marine 10w40. A little more expense but better oil for the long run.
But since most only change once a year, the extra expense is not that much.

Bottom line, change the oil once a year and not a big deal.
