Well, it happened once again to me on the lake today: was able to tilt down the outdrive at the ramp and back off the trailer. Came into some shallower water and was able to trim up, but then lost all function although I could hear it clicking in both up and down positions of the switch.
I shut down the engine and flexed the shrink wrapped connectors about 6 inches from the trim pump (in the engine compartment) which briefly restored function - I had to do the same again at the ramp after getting the boat back on the trailer.

Once home, I took a blade to the shrink wrap and confirmed my suspicion: both spade connectors dirty, and one completely corroded and broken.....

Should be a relatively easy fix, except there isn't that much extra wire to play with, and I really don't want to add an extension with even more connectors...

Well, at least the mystery is solved. If you use good quality wire of the same gauge, good connectors and shrink wrap them, you should never have a problem.

Any suggestions on "good connectors"?

Ancor marine. Their terminals do not corrode in marine environments. If the wires are too short you can pick some tinned marine wire (same company) and solder the extensions then use shrink wrap insulation. I've done this a few times with my trailer wiring over the years and not only does it get wet but it is IN salt water lol.

Thanks Lou - I'm often in the salt environment also...

Sorry I should've been specific. +1 on Ancor. They're the last word.
