Hey there,

At the end of last season, I noticed my raw water pump was leaking water onto the belts of the motor and spraying it all over the engine bay. I asked my dealer to look into this, as they were replacing the baffles as well. They could not get the water pump to leak with muffs and did not replace the pump. Before we put the boat in the water for the season this year, I'd like to figure out if I need a water pump. After reading about these pumps, I understand there is a weep hole, however, I can not make it leak on muffs!! Does water run thru this pump when the thermostat is both opened and closed?

Thanks

Hey there. I am experiencing the same thing and the leaking is getting worse so I am having the marina replace the raw water pump. I found that mine leaked as soon as I started it (in the water and with the muffs on). I have a 5.7 Volvo, but I imagine is may be similar. I know this isn't a ton of help, but at least you know another fellow Four Winns owner is with you! Lol! Good luck wit the fix.

Raw water pumps run constantly whenever the engine is running.
They usually only leak in the way you say when the water seal behind the impeller is leaking and by that time the bearing is toast.
can you hear a whining bearing sound when the engine is running?
To be doubly sure loosen and take the belts off and turn the pump by hand, it's supposed to be smooth so if it feels very rough you need a new pump, or to change the bearing. there are kits available with new bearing, seal, oring and impeller, it's fairly straightforward.
Good luck!

The seal ( and bearing, if needs be) are easily changed. They are inexpensive, especially in comparison to the cost of a new pump.

There is a post/ thread t on this site with all the details/ part numbers etc.
