OK, had the boat out for a 10 day vacation with the wife and kids over the 4th. Boat ran awesome up until we hit some rough water (wakes from other boats) then it started acting like it was starving for fuel. It would surge and it you gave it more throttle it would die, back off the throttle and it would run. Run it below 1500-2000 RPM run all day anything over it would act up again. Now having said that let it set a while and it would run fine until you hit rough water. I changed the water/fuel separator, poured it out in a jar no water in the fuel. It almost acts like there is some junk in the fuel tank sloshing around with the fuel and when we hit rough water it is getting sucked up with the fuel, but there are no signs of anything in the carb or fuel filters.

My question is, is there an in tank fuel filter? And if so what's the part number for a 27 year old boat?

Lou in know you have a boat exactly like mine and have done numerous improvements and work on yours. Please teach me your ways Great Wizard of Four Winns.

Until Lou responds....similar issue posted in 2010 and Lou said to check the anti syphon valve at the fuel tank...it has a spring loaded ball valve that may get corroded.

The guy with the issue then loosened gas cap to avoid the vacuum and it ran well.

I personally haven't a clue..just passing on what I read

Thanks for the heads up, you wouldn't happen to have the link for that thread? I tried to search but didn't come up with anything. Maybe my google-fu is off this morning.

It does not really fit the sticky rusty anti siphon valve problem I had about 15 years back; but it would not hurt to replace it with the better Evinrude/Johnson brass one vs the alu one F/W installed. Sounds more like junk in the tank and you may have to (very carefully) remove the gas gauge sending unit and look inside with a very bright flashlight. Might have to pump out the bottom layer that might be clogging the pick up tube.
Note:
Shut off all electrical
Remove rear seat if it's the big bench
Remove gas tank hatch
Very carefully remove the 5 screws/bolts that hold the cover for the sending unit
Lift it out

Also check the vent for clogging and may have to test the fuel pump. Small chance it could be the float in the carb...

Kind of sounds like the gas tank vent problem. Perhaps a kink or clog in the vent line is made worse when gas sloshes up to it. (liquid would have more resistance through a clog than air)
Do you have insects that could have nested in the vent line? Down here we have "mud dobbers" that could do that.

When it happens, it would be easy to loosen the fill cap to see if relieves the suction.

I have run a section of weed eater string down the vent tube to make sure it is not clogged, however it doesn't do it all the time only in rough water which makes me think junk in the tank. I did notice that the fuel gauge wasn't reading right so perhaps we are on to something there. Once I get time to pull the sending unit out I will give you guys an update as to what I find. I knew I could count on you guys to get me pointed in the right direction as always.

Just be careful with those lil bitty screws; they can strip easily and roll into the tank!
Didn't do either but could see how it could happen. Did you happen to change to e10 gas recently?

No I have been running 100% gas in it since I bought it 4 years ago.
