Peel the rubber boot on the steering tilt mechanism back toward the wheel. Verify that the Allen head screw on the steering shaft u joint is tight. You will probably notice some play in the steering shaft and bearing, some play in the u joint, and some play in the tilt mechanism latch.
You may be able to pull the cup holders to check the steering unit behind the dash.
Check to make sure nothing is coming apart. You could try to take things apart, and may have some luck finding some replacements for worn part. Like many others, you may eventually be looking at replacing the steering components to get rid of the slack.
