Post subject:  transom assemblies replaced?

Saw a 2000 298 for sale the other day that said both transom assemblies were just replaced? Why? Is this common? Not sure exactly what drives they are but they are Volvo dual props. Is this something I should stay away from? Or is it a good thing that these were just replaced?

Thanks!

I don't know of any issues with Volvo transom assemblies, I will say that if you don't pull your drives on a routine basis and check for water in the bellows, a broken u-joint spinning at 3200 rpms will cause a lot of damage to the transom assembly. If you're interested in the boat I would the owner why he did the replacements.

Thanks. I still haven't talked to them. It is at a dealer/marina. Not sure if it is on consignment or marina owned. Sent an email out last night asking if it was available for viewing. I think the price is a little high on it but my main purpose is to see if we even like the layout of the 298 but if it is nice we may be interested in this one but not at their asking price.

Replacing transom mounts is not a common repair; usually this is due to impact damage, deferred maintenance or severe corrosion. Id want to know the story on this boat...

Going to look at it this week so will be sure to ask and see what kind of answer I get. I think it is overpriced but want to see and touch a 298 to see if it is what we want.

Went and looked at it yesterday. He said the transoms were rotted away. Sound like a lack of maintenance. The boat was fresh water since new. Either way it was in pretty rough shape so I'm not interested anyway.
