Last year I bought a 1999 Horizon 240 with a 5.7L Volvo Penta. Unfortunately, this Spring the engine gave out and required replacement. We went with a crate 5.7L Volvo Penta engine. During sea trials, the engine caps about 3800 RPM. The shop that did the replacement says the boat has the incorrect props. The boat currently has F8 props but should be F4s. A prop shop told them that the pitch on a F4 will allow higher RPMS and faster speeds. I'm looking for information if the F4 is the correct prop for this engine size.

According to Four Winns a 5.7gs in your boat should have f5 & a 5.7gsi should have a F6.

F8! No wonder it needed a replacement engine. Being over-propped like that probably ruined the valves.

Or sometimes a seller keeps the good props and puts anything they can find on there to make the sale...let the buyer beware

I have a 2000 H240 (same as 1999) and will say that the Four Winns data shown above is quite accurate. I have the 5.7GS engine with SX drive (250hp carbureted). I have the 14.5" x 19p prop and hit the same mph numbers at the correct rpm. So it sounds like F5 is correct prop set for you, assuming your crate engine is carbureted. Maybe F6 if fuel injected and at least 280hp.
