I noticed something this weekend that I don't think is normal. I have a very smooth engagement of my outdrive when going into forward. So smooth that I can't feel or hear the slightest noise. Reverse is a bit rougher. BUT, I noticed this weekend that it seemed to take upwards of 2 seconds for it to engage in foward. I thought it was always immediate but now there is this delay. Literally up to 2 seconds. What do you think? Is there an adjustment? Is this the sign of a serious problem?

I recall reading a fairly recent thread, can't recall if it was on here or on boatingabc.com of someone with a late model Volvo who had the same problem. It turned out to be an adjustment of the cable on the control unit, I wish I could remember which board I read that on. Has your boat always been like that, or did this happen recently?
I know with my old OMC Cobra, in order for it to shift right, the linkage has to be moving freely and the bellcrank in the pivot housing has to be free of corrosion and well greased. That and keeping the engine idle in gear between 500 and 600 rpm really helps it to shift like it should.

I have to believe this is of recent on set because a couple of times when docking I was like, "whoa", move already! Cable adjust is understandable. I'm just hoping its not something serious in the outdrive delaying the engagement like when a car transmission goes.

Nah, two different animals. In a car transmission, you've got bands, valves, solenoids, converters, electronics, hydraulic fluid in various states of degradation, check valves, widgets, gadgets, doohickies, inputs from the right rear speaker on the stereo system and the cig... er, "power port," the level of fluid in your headlights - all kinds of crap and it all has to work perfectly.

In your drive, the cable moves a gear until it engages another gear (or not). OK, a bit of an oversimplification, but not much. Someone ought to convert a stern drive for car use...
