I have twin 4.3 GI's (TBI).

My starboard engine cranks and fires in about 2-3 seconds. Never a problem.

My port side engine, only when cold, takes about three 5-10 second crank times to get it to fire. When hot, it starts right up every time and only takes 1-2 seconds of cranking.

I just did a full tune up on both engines, cleaned the spark arrestors too. Replaced fuel filter/seperators (were replaced last fall and no water whatsoever in them) My engines have 102 hours.

Where do I start to troubleshoot?

If I had to guess I would say fuel is the issue, or more specifically a lack of fuel. That would be the first thing i would look for.

Thanks for the reply.

I noticed that when it doesnt fire immediately, I dont hear the fuel pump (low pressure on the front of the motor?) prime itself. It takes 2-3 tries or at least 5 turns of the key from OFF to RUN to get it to activate and prime.

I also remembered that early this spring, I noticed the low pressure fuel pump on that motor getting really hot to the touch, after only running the engine for 4-5 minutes.

Does this sound like a low pressure fuel pump thats on its way out?

It could be something as simple as a very small crack in a fuel line or fitting to the pump. It does not take much to let air get sucked in, there are cracks that will let air in but not let fuel out so you will never know that there is an issue. You might start by replacing the fuel line from the tank to the pump and checking the fittings on the tank and pump for cracks.

Ok, it hasnt acted up in the last few times Ive started it. Im wondering - even though the fuel filter/water seperators were replaced last fall, the last owners I bought the boat from barely used the boat. Im thinking maybe the fuel filter/seperators have water in the or something. Today Im going to remove them, drain the contents into a clear container and see if I can spot any water. For the price, I might just replace both of them while Im at it....

Just to update the thread for future Ifourwinn'ers....

I replaced my fuel filter/water separators and the problem resolved itself. The fuel filters looked older than 1 season (I replace them every spring after my first tank of gas run through) and the port side fuel filter had a bunch of junk in it when I emptied it out.

Now it starts right up every time quickly. Heck, I think it now starts faster than the stbd engine

Well this issue has reared its ugly head again. I hadnt started the boat since we were out Sunday. When I went out to the boat yesterday to fire it up, the port side took about 5 minutes to start. Finally it fired and stalled immediately. After that, it started up and stayed running.

Im going to take another IFW.com members advice, who has the same boat, and check my anti-siphon valve tonight.

Then, Im going to remove my low pressure fuel pump and check the screens for blockages.

Thirdly, if both of those check out and I still have the problem, Im going to test my fuel pressures and replace whichever fuel pump is acting up. My money is on the low pressure one.
