Forgive my ignorance, but I have been trying to decipher what all the letters following the engine displacement mean. The air cleaner cover on my engine says:

Volvo Penta 5.0FL

The decal on the valve cover says:

OMC Cobra 50 2APHUE

Searching some parts websites I have noticed that there is never a listing for 5.0 FL. Lots of GL's tho. Does this mean I have a super rare engine? Should I take it to Vegas and see Rick at Pawn Stars?

To signify what type of engine it is... Example:
G = GM. F = Ford
Volvo Penta "GL or GS" = carb
GX/Gi = multiport fuel injection
GXi = Highest HP available in that engine size
GSi/GLi = TBI fuel injection... better then carb but not really.
-C = catalytic converter

Soo, in the real world that means...
4.3GL = 190hp
4.3GXI = 225hp
5.0GL = 220hp
5.0GXI = 270hp
5.7GL = 260hp
5.7Gi=280hp
5.7GXi=320hp
plus the big blocks...

There's a BUNCH more combos.. but since around 1998 you can go by what I put above as they're all chevy. Basically avoid anything GL/GS. The L stands for Lame and the S stands for stupid (since the 4 banger is a 3.0GS).

In a modern boat (2000 and above) never get anything but a GXi engine in it. Good power and good resale. I've seen many 24+ft boats with 5.0GL's, they shouldn't have been allowed to be built that underpowered.

5.0 FL = 190hp
It's a Ford 302 small block with a carb.

Thanks for the breakdown ric. I knew I had the 5.0 (302ci Ford), with a Holley 2bbl carb, so that is what the "F" stands for in FL. However, in your breakdown, you say that the 5.0 GL is rated at 220 HP, that would mean a GM 5.0 (a 305ci)? Then you say my 5.0 FL is rated at 190HP, why is the GM engine rated 30hp higher than the Ford? Especially considering the 305ci was hardly a match for the 302ci back in the 90's....

Also, why am I having such a hard time finding 5.0 FL parts on websites? Like I said in my previous post, 5.0 GL stuff is everywhere.

Thanks again for your input, just trying to figure it all out....p.s. that Vista you are looking at is sweet, I have looked at that listing a few times myself 8)

Mine is a 2 bbl and 220 hp.
I think different years were rated at different horsepower.

8.1GXi would be tight but the 5.7GXi bolts right in with factory motor mounts. I think a hotter/faster setup would be an H180 OB with a ETEC 250

So I guess I have the 5.0 that came in F-150's not the one from the Mustang GT, thanks ric for killing my illusions of speed, power, and glory :(

Naw, just kidding, I'm a cruiser, not a gofast guy....just as long as it starts everytime and doesn't die in the middle of Lake Onatrio, I'm happy....

It's still the same engine, just with a carb and not the FI (Boats did come with the FI 5.0 mustang engine). Pick up a Jegs/Summit racing catalog and order some heads, cam, intake, and a nice holley 4bbl marine carb. No problems making 400hp. Of course if you had the FI 5.0, you could just slap on a supercharger kit :)

not exactly a 5.0gl is a 2 barrel and a 5.0gs is a 4 barrel
ANY GL came factory with a 2 barrel and ANY GS came factory with a 4 Barrel

A 1999 GSi was apparently 280 hp, then a later Gi was 280 hp which then became 300 hp. To be honest, the 5.7 GXi (320 hp) in my 2004 245 boat feels no different to the 5.7 GSi TBI engine in my previous 1999 225 boat, if anything it feels less powerful ( and I know the 245 is heavier).
