F-150 Ecoboost

Is anyone towing with a F-150 with Ecoboost? My lease is coming up and I am looking for some feed back. :?:

Thanks, I did a search on "F-150" and no hits. I am towing about 8000lbs. The good thing is it only twice a year, once to put it in and again to take it out. But at the moment, were moving closer, its a 28 mile drive.

A friend of mine (one of the ones referenced in the link above) has owned one for several months now, and his latest feedback is that the non-towing mileage is terrible, far less than he expected.

I like the theory behind it, but for anyone (like me) who tends to buy new and then drive it 'til the wheels fall off, I wouldn't bite on the Ecoboost. It's too new, and I'm not interested in replacing $8,000 worth of turbos on a 10 year old truck that's worth $6K.

What we need is a diesel 1/2-ton.

But wouldn't a 1/2 ton GM/Ford/Ram pickup still be a turbo/diesel if they ever actually offer one ?

Most diesel turbos can be accessed with basic hand tools and cost around $500 to rebuild.

The ecoboost turbos require the engine to be pulled to get access. Can they be rebuilt? Sure, but you're looking at $1000 for them along with the jesus christ labor of getting them out and back in.

Good truck, just sell it when warranty is up. Oh, and never buy a used one out of warranty.

Not to hijack.... thought some of you guys might be interested. I have a 2013 F550 in my shop, with the 6.7 diesel. There is zero room in the engine compartment. I think they have to lift the cab off the truck to do any major engine work, or replace the engine. :shock:

Good point Cap'n. The difference, I suppose, is that the turbo diesels aren't new anymore and, at least in my mind, are more proven than what they're putting on the Ecoboost.

From what I have heard/read, the Ecoboost is great. There is absolutely no problems at all with owning a turbo gasoline vehicle. They are just as reliable as a N/A motor if taken care of correctly.

I do have to point out in the thread Cap'n linked to that Ric has made some pretty asinine comments. On gasoline turbo engines we have these things called "Blow off valves". What they do Ric, is open up when the throttle is shut releasing any built up pressure. I also know several people running no BOV on their motors. Is it bad for the turbo? Yes it is because it causes compressor surge. These people don't care though because they are using $300 turbos on junk yard LS motors (yep those again) and pushing them into the 9's in the 1/4 mile. To say a turbo can spin backwards makes you lose all (if any) credibility you had.

FYI, I have a turbo 2001 Z28 I just got done building. I hope one day my turbo will spin backwards and push me into warp speed into the future. That way I won't have to read anymore dumb comments from Ric.

The Ecoboost engines have compressor bypass valves (same as a blow off valve except they dump the boost back into the inlet side of the air duct.)

The new gasoline direct injection turbo engines are getting to be almost the same as the diesels except they don't have an extra grand of emissions equipment in the exhaust system, that and they have spark plugs
