Going to be taking the boat on it's maiden voyage to Coeur d' Alene in a few weeks. It's a lengthy tow, so I will be checking and greasing the bearings, buying a spare for the trailer, and some other odds and ends. Any suggestions on other things to keep in/on the boat for the trip? Any other Trailer service I should perform? |

Take a spare hub with pre-packed bearings, ready to bolt on. Ensure you have a suitable wrench, split pin and studs. |

Check the age of your main tires. If over 5-7 years old replace. You can buy tires mounted on new rims as cheap as tires alone. DOT age stamped on side of tires, XXYY XX=week, YY = year ie: 2305 = 23rd week of 2005 Check your lights. Inflate all tires to maximum rating also stamped on tires. |

Take an IR temp gun with you to monitor hub temps if you can. I usually stop in the first 20-30 miles and measure the temps to make sure the bearings are ok and the brakes arent hung up |

Make sure you can break loose the lug nuts in case you get a flat, also ensure that your jack can be used with the trailer axle, and that you have a good long handled lug wrench that fits your trailer lugs. Most of the time they are old school Chevrolet 13/16ths and both of our Jeeps are 3/4 or 19 mm. Also some chocks for the trailer in case you have to change a tire. If you have a lock on your spare tire make sure to take the key lol. |

I tend to like the comfort of cardboard when I have to work on the road. It also makes a good place for parts so you don't loose them in the grass. Liquid wrench or pb blaster is a necessity for road trips and as many tools as you can realistically bring... vice grips are also a must in the toolbox... Also if you have room a board for the jack in case you are in the side of the road. |

Make sure you have a jack that will get under the axle when it has a flat tire. Also bring some 2x6 or other blocks in case you have to put one on the ground and pull the trailer's flat tire up on the block when you find that the jack is an inch too tall. You might check whether your vehicle's jack will work for the trailer. |
