I had no choice in the matter. West Marine only had 2 and the other one looked real weak and I think the max weight lift was low (probably would have been enough) and the Admiral said get the "good" one.

Who am I to argue!

When I move up to a bigger boat, if its still in good shape, I will remove it.

I still think it's a very worthwhile upgrade. My original jack was still working fine, but was wobbly and I just didn't trust it much with the weight of the boat on it. In storage I've always rested it on a padded jack stand, which I'll continue to do anyway, but now I won't feel like I have to.

My troubles had to do with delays in getting the weld-on mounting plate from Fulton, and my trailer shop deciding they couldn't do the welding once they saw the plate (after I spent a lunch hour hooking up the boat and towing it to their shop). The plate wound up taking 3 weeks to get here, and I had to take the boat to a shop I've never used before to get the welding done. The last coat of paint is drying as I type this and some replacement stripes are on the way from Winnisquam, so the finish line is in sight.

If I knew how to weld, this would have been done a month ago.

Last pictures. There was a delay with the stripes, so these will have to do.

Factory plate welded on; I chose to have the original mount cut off so the new one could go in the same location. I had to clean up the welds a bit, and then primer & paint:

I did the first real hitch & tow with it yesterday. It's a noticeable improvement, especially when hitching up and needing to persuade the tongue an inch or two to get on the ball.

I will say the foot brake, or at least the one I got, is worthless to the point that I took it back off. That's OK, I wasn't thrilled about trusting the boat to a 10-cent piece of plastic anyway.

Nice job, Mike.

Yeah ... the wheel brake thingy is kinda ridiculous once you start to get anywhere close to the rated weight of the jack. Maybe would work for a 14' runabout. Love the thing otherwise, though.

Sorry I am raising a very old post from the dead--but I am trying to figure out what replacement jack I need to buy. I am planning to just replace with the same factory jack http://www.fultonperformance.com/content/products.aspx?lvl=3&parentid=7500&catID=7640&part=XP10W%200301. I bent the hydraulic on mine this weekend. The original appears to be a weld on. If I buy another weld on version, will I be able to use the existing mount and just swap out the jack? I am hoping this is just a matter of using a socket wrench and being done with it--but I am starting to fear it might be more. :shock:

I finally got a chance to put a F2 jack on our boat trailer… I got a mounting plate which needs to be weld to existing mount or directly to the trailer frame. I decided to cut off existing mount (for old jack), grind remains off and flat out to the frame then weld a new mounting plate.
After I cut off the factory mounting bracket I realized that I let one of my friend borrow both of my welders and they went to out of state for car racing…. I did not want to wait until my welder is back so I changed a plan and fabricating a bracket from ½” aluminum plate. It is a simple 2 plate bolted together concept and decorative plate in between to hide bolts. I feel it came out much better than just using U-bolts…. And did not use welder… just milling machine and drill press, tap.

Cut off original bracket and ready to grind remains off.

Sushi you are the man.... Never mind your cottage I want to come to Boston and see your shop there. Afterall I have seen the cottage (excelent job!) and it's very nice.

Do you actually have these tools at your house or are they available at your work? You are a very capable craftsman and ingenuitive too. I wish we lived closer to each other I could only imagine the projects we would tackle

Thought I would let you guys know, my Fulton F2 broke a year after buying. Started cranking real hard and slow. I took the top off and lubed the gears and shaft. Worked ok for a few times and then became impossible to move. I took it apart lubed, tried adjusting, etc. End result, the gears started to grind and I had to use the hydraulic jack to get the boat on the trailer. Lucky I got it on sale, but $79 down the tubes in a year.

Bought a $20 one at Northern Tool.
