Was by my neighbors the other day and he asked me to look at his trailer. He has a 2008 H180 and on the inside of one of the wheels/tire it was covered in an orange looking residue? Almost like rust dusting? It is a single axle trailer with surge brakes I believe. Only thing I can think of whitout pulling the wheel and drum off is for some reason he got rust build up on that brake drum? Any other ideas? I think we are going to wash it off once it warms up a bit and drive it and see if it comes back.

I'd pull the wheel & drum before test driving. It's too simple to risk. Sounds like rust buildup was dumped out of the drum though.

Was thinking of just a short test drive, but maybe if I have time I will pull it this weekend. Will be busy working on my boat first though. Hes not real good with a wrench.

From what you're describing it sounds like a dry residue? Don't know what it would be other than rust.

Yes it is dry. Inside of tire, wheel and brake backing plate are covered in it.

That seems like a lot of rust. Seems like a good idea to go ahead and pull 'em just to make sure everything looks OK inside.

I'm no expert, sounds like brake dust to me. we have a durango at work that has orange rust like spots on the paint on the rear quarter panels. for a while I thought dodge just did a horrible job with the paint, but we found out that it would clean off with some scrubbing and it was the metal flakes from the brakes that were on the paint and were rusting. This was for disc brakes though...I'm not as familiar with drums (never had to work on them always had disc). Just my thoughts....

I guess, the drum fills with water when you launch boat, some amount of water stays in drum and rusts everything, when you drive down the road and rusty water/brake dust solution splatters on inside of wheel and dries, what little metal particles that stick to white wheel really stand out.

I agree that you pull wheel hub and inspect that the only thing that is going on is expected corrosion.

Well here in salt water land that's pretty typical brake drum rust but I'd want to take a look to make sure the brake linings are not de-laminating from the metal shoes...I have drum brakes and a flush system and when you flush it the water leaves rust residue on the inside of the rims but the rust on the drums rubs off with the first few brake applications so it's a non issue if the brakes are in good shape otherwise. IF you have a car with disc brakes and you don't use it for month or so take a look at the rotors and I bet you'll see the same thing...unless you live in AZ or another place with very low humidity...raw cast iron rusts period and this is also why I fill my engine and manifolds with -100 Antifreeze for winter storage...moisture in the air will rust cast iron....

I have the exact same issues here. Turned out everything was fine inside the drums. Just lubed and cleaned them. All was good.
