How do you remove wheel studs on the axle with drum brakes? I've got a bad stud on one and have not done this kind of thing before. It is a '99 Four Winns trailer.

Thanks!

Dan

Remove drum and shoes, put a nut on stud and pound out with a large hammer. Put the new one in and use a nut to pull all the way through.

How do you get the drum off? The stud is ready to come out, but I don't know how to get the drum off. The drum may have rusted itself to the axle housing, if it works like an automotive drum. I'm soaking it in WD40 as we speak, but may need something more effective.

go over to
http://www.championtrailers.com
and look in the tech section...under the drum brake installation article...

Basically you have to back off the brake shoe adjustment by using a brake adjusting tool (looks like a bent screwdriver) through a slot in the backing plate. You use the tool to turn a small star wheel till it backs off the adjustment otherwise sometimes you can't get the drum off. Then you remove the grease cap...cotter pin...unscrew the big nut that holds on the bearing/drum and it should come off. Be prepared to catch the outer bearing as it will come out...

Thanks!

I'll have to try and get my hands on one of those adjusting tools.

You can get a tool at any parts or tool store. Autozone etc, Sears, etc.
Just look/ask for brake tools.

I had a stud spin on me last week when we put new tires on.
That's a fun deal. Dotco grinder to get it off. The good news is that the new stud grip great and I did not spend
another 150 bucks on a new brake drum! It's bad enough with triples just to buy tires.....................lol

If it doesnt come off with a hammer , you can put a little heat to it and that should help, you can use a screwdriver for the adjuster on the drum breaks, works like a champ
