Post subject:  retreaded tires?

Was just bringing my boat home after winterization. On the hwy home I heard a loud sound. Looked in my rear mirror and noticed all the tread on my tire was off on the trailer. Tire was completely stripped of all tread but still inflated. The boat and trailer are 3 years old, the tires still had the nipples on them. Has anyone heard of Four Winns using re-tread on their tires? And would I be covered by any type of warranty? Thanks!

Thats not a retread, thats an issue caused by running an underinflated tire. Actually running a tire at 5psi under what is recommended could cause that. All trailer tires should be run at max recommended inflation and should be checked often.

Mine did the same thing on the way to the Lake labor day weekend. My tires we the orig. tires on the trailer from 1997. Both had great tread. I think mine were a little dry rotted and possibly underinflated. Just get yourself a new set of tires and always have a good spare. You dont want to be stranded on the side of the road for 4 hours like I was. My trailer had wheel locks that I wasn't aware of. The orig. owner didn't give me the keys to get the locking nuts off. It was a mess and ended up having to limp down the road about 30 miles to a service station. This is what mine looked like.

wow, thats a good picture. trailer tire manufacturers actually recommend you replace the tires every 3 to 5 years whether you have anything wrong with them or not.

I've had good luck with the Kenda Load Star bias ply tires, I think replacing them every 5-7 years is a good plan. And about those locking lug nuts, I will never have another car with them, they strip easily and I pulled my back out trying to get one of them off my Toyota about 12 years ago...Wound up having to hammer on a 3/4 in socket to get the damn thing off!

When I finally got to the tire place down the road, they ended up having to pound a socket on as well. It took them about 2 1/2 hours to get the two off the wheels and the one off the spare. At first they didn't think they were going to be able to get them off. I really thought I was going to have to get a wrecker to come get my boat and tow it home.
