Post subject:  Patching trailer tire?

One of my trailer tires has a slow leak (65 to 45 psi in 3-4 weeks). I took it to Wal-Mart (the only tire shop open) on Sunday afternoon. They informed me that they would not repair the tire, something about trailer tires being made differently than truck tires and repairs were unlikely to 'hold' (their word). I am going to call the local Les Schwab dealer tomorrow, but wondered if anyone else has input on the topic of patching trailer tires.

Thanks,

I'd say it depends on the overall condition of the tire and what's causing the leak. It could be a bad or loose valve stem, in which case it's an easy fix. If it's a puncture, and it's in the tread area, then a patch can certainly be made (I'd recommend having the wheel/tire balanced after it's patched). If it's a puncture in the sidewall or the transition between sidewall and tread, it's probably not safe to repair.

Mullet Mart has policies for everything, and sometimes those policies are just stupid. I guess they have to do that, considering the abilities of their average employee.

Where is the leak?? If it's in the treads, should not be a big-deal. If it's in the sidewall trash it. IMO.
