I can't get my truck to disengage the 4x4, I pushed the button to pull out the boat in 4x4 mode and it worked fine but when I pushed the 2HI button the stupid thing doesn't want to go back into 2 wheel drive  . Have any of you guys run into a similar problem with your tow vehicle if so any information would be greatly appreciated.

Put it in neutral or park, on a flat surface and try to disengage.

disengage again and put it in reverse and backup slowly for a couple feet.

Didn't know about the reverse trick going to try it when I get home. Thanks, makes sense I will also try in neutral. I disconnected the battery and connected it in the morning and no go nothing changed. I hope putting it in reverse works I want to take the boat out tomorrow but I am being warned not to drive with the 4 wheel drive engaged on dry pavement.

I have had it hang up before on my ford...I pu in bnuetral, turned off and restarted.....backing may do trick too since it disengages the locking hubs.

Thanks guys once again this forum has saved me hundreds of dollars in repairs  I disconnected the battery and left the truck sit for a day, I connected it and turned it on and did what you guys told me I put it in reverse and kept clicking on the 2HI button while I was going about 3 mph in reverse it didn't click the first time it just blinked and went back to four hi but I threw it in neutral and it clicked on 2HI and stayed there I was jumping for joy because the mechanic told me to service the 4 wheel drive would be expensive. Chalk it up to my forum for helping me out once again, the Admiral was quite happy she can go spend some more money at the mall instead of putting it into the truck.

There are things you can do to reduce the chance of having this problem with the electronically engaged 4x4...
One is make sure all tires are inflated to about the same psi, if the circumference of the tires is significantly different it can hang up in 4x4 because there is pressure or binding created by the difference in wheel rpms..
The other is do your shifting in or out in a straight line, not turning, that can also bind up the drivetrain. The front wheels have to turn a longer distance when you turn so they speed up relative the the rears.

I kept my old 98 Jeep for this reason partly, they had what I felt was the best 4x4 system in any vehicle, completely manual fulltime/parttime 4x4 engaged by a simple lever. Always works, but the driver has to have a little knowledge on how to use it.
My 07 has the completely automatic Quadradrive 2 which is an auto transfer case, full time 4x4 and front and rear locking diffs. Yes the front has a locker, all electronic, and it works great, but there is a lot more to go wrong than the simple system on the old 98.....

Thanks for the tips, I don't think I will engage the 4x4 I don't need it to pull my boat out that 6.0 doesn't even realize there is a boat on the hitch.

Yep if you have good ramps you probably don't need it, here in winter you need it just to drive, LOL...

Never had a problem at the ramp although I do have a lift kit on her and she has huge tires! I sometimes watch these guys pulling out huge boats with brand new underpowered trucks and I wonder what was going through their heads. I usually don't even put it in tow mode when getting out of the water ( not sure if that is good or not) the 6 liter engine just doesn't really care. Just give it gas and you're good.

Yes I remember the winters in Chicago and they can be quite fun with a 4x4 watching everybody stuck and asking for help. I always helped and got thrown a little gas money for it.

Tow mode won't help you pull it out of the water. All that does is hold it in gear until a designated RPM before it shifts. Helps to get you going in traffic and wont allow it to shift too soon and bog down if you aren't in the gas a whole lot. Also will down shift to drive (3) automatically when you get below 60 mph or so. I use it the tow/haul mode on my Avalanche every time I am trailering the boat a decent amount of miles.

Ok now I know when to use the tow mode option Thanks I usually turn it on when I am taking off at a light and then I turn it off when I pick up some speed .

Yeah, won't hurt to leave it on all the time. Plus, it let's my exhaust note sing a little higher in the upper RPM's :).

My truck tends to do the same with the exhaust note so I thought it was exerting the engine more then needed. Doesn't it kill your mileage it's bad enough already since I don't have the diesal.
