I'm buying my first boat, a 1988 160 Freedoom.

The current owner sent both props to be refinished and they wont be back for some time. So I'm looking into buying a prop now so we can take her out asap.

Any suggesting on sizing ? I found a post here mentioning 13 1/4 x 17 as being in the mid range.

What spline will it require ?

Thanks for the help.

edit: FYI, the props where sent after I drove the boat on the lake. We though they would be back at the same time the survey of the boat was finished.

After reading almost every post about what prop and size and what are you going to do with it etc it almost seems to be that everyone ends up with a 14.25 x 19. As for the splines it should be 15. Goodluck

Won't this be big for the 3.0l 4 cylinder ?

They are relatively cheap so I guess there is room for experimenting...

Thanks

14.25 x 17 and go from there. It might handle a 19, but with only two people max. The 3.0 is a great motor, but a hot rod it is not.
On my Bayliner and Stingray both, this is what I put on. 45 mph is a good clip for these boats.

I tried to mount a Turning Point 14.25 x 19 and a 14.25 x 17 and found out the hub is too big for the lower unit. Strange thing. Could I have a 1988 lower unit with 1989 shaft ?

I'll stay with the 13.25 x 17 for now.

Wait and ask Ric, he had a 3.0 in his 180 , I know he played around with props and could give you some good feedback.
