I notice when at cruzeing speed when trimming that the boat slight kicks down. It noticeable not for passengers, but I can tell. The battery is new along with detailed tune up. Am I over analyzing this or us it normal?

What engine and year? Many boats do this but no it is not normal.

What do you mean it kicks down, does the engine seem to momentarily stutter or lose power?
If so check all the battery connections, grounds etc. the trim pump draws a lot of current and if you have corroded wiring or terminals it can drop the voltage down low enough to affect the ignition system.

It is not normal on a newer boat.
But if you boat is 20+ years old, and it is only for a split second, and your passengers don't notice it...then you probably don't need to worry about it. My 1987 OMC did this pretty routinely. I figured it was caused by Old Wiring, and Old Trim pump motor (worn brushes?)

Like Lou said, you can check all the power and ground connections, including those at the trim solenoids.

Mine did this when I first had it but ever since I replaced all the battery wiring back in '04 or so it has not done it at all. The OE wiring on the old boats at least was very poor, cheap auto quality cables. I used 2 gauge for the short runs and 1/0 for the longer ones. I also had terminals crimped on and bolted marine grade automotive style clamps to those terminals that hold more securely than wingnuts. Wingnuts have no place on a boat, they get loose and cause problems. If you want to stay with the standard set up use nylock nuts at the battery studs, instead of wingnuts.

1988 Horizon 4.3 2 barrel. I was thinking it may need new alternator.

Before you do that, keep in mind that electricity, is physics. You have a circuit, if you have too much resistance, you don't have enough current.

LOL.....
If your battery cables are OE, go to the back of the boat and remove them and throw them in the trash. Go to a West Marine store, or any good marine shop and have them make you up new marine quality cables, tinned wire not the automotive quality crap that FW installed. Minimum 2 gauge for batt to starter, batt to ground. Make sure you install the cables on the batt with nyloc nuts not wing nuts. Clean the positive terminal on the starter solenoid where the positive cable from the battery connects. The starter solenoid terminals are often rusty because the drain for the manifold is right above them. Lastly take a look at the connections for the trim pump itself. If there was corrosion anywhere that is your issue. If you are not having chronic dead battery problems, the alternator is not likely to be the cause.
High resistance in your wiring, causes a substantial voltage drop and that reduces current to the ignition system and there you have it. Fixed that like I said above with a new 2 battery system with good wiring. Throw the OE stuff in the trash...Your boat is as old as mine....if its never been re-wired for the batt wiring...its WAY overdue....
And if you're going to do that, may I suggest that you take the opportunity to put in a 2 battery system with a switch. Two group 27 dual purpose batteries and a good quality switch like a Cole-Hersee, Guest or Blue Seas.

All great advise above from Lou.
My 1982 Chaparral had original wiring, that's why I had the same problem. The battery carries the high surge load, not the alternator.
Only difference I have from Lou's advise is I think you would be fine with dual Group 24 batteries if you wanted to save some weight.
