usually my boat never even registers on the temperature gauge (T<120f) but the 2 days I've taken it out this season its been fluctuating from about 140f to 180f and I want to fix that right away, could it simply be time for a new impeller?

Yes to the impeller, and if it usually runs below 120* your thermostat is stuck open more than likely, or someone removed it...

thank you, I'll see if I can find the impeller locally and try to fix it this weekend, heck I think I should buy a few, I don't know how much longer they'll be available

I'll also inspect the thermostat

Also keep in mind if this is the joint venture product made with OMC/Volvo (ie cone clutch outdrive, raw water impeller on the engine) Volvo parts will also fit. If there are no OMC (Evinrude) dealers around find a VP dealer . The parts are the same (94 OMC=94 Volvo Penta) ...

I ordered a thermostat and gasket kit which showed up in the last couple days, for some reason now, I recall a shop telling me years ago, something along the lines of my thermostat housing was too deteriorated to hold a thermostat, they may have offered to sell me one or they may have told me it was obsolete, either way I think they said I could just run without one

well I will know for sure once I crack this housing open, I have found a couple used ones online, I wonder how bad the damage could be, I suppose if the lower half is bad to where the thermostat wouldn't seal the water out when cold, it would still be better than where I'm at now- as in now, the system is wide open so the engine never warms up, if a thermostat allowed some water to pass at all times, it would have to be less than what is going through currently and would still open completely when hot

I opened the housing, there was quite a bit of debris in the thermostat area and that quite possibly could have held it open, I used my wire brush cup on my angle grinder to remove the old gasket material which was on there pretty darn good, I'm anxious to get it back together and see if she warms up to temp

Looks like you're on the right track. Running with no tstat is a bad idea, because these engines run cool to start with, with no tstat you will barely get up to 120* and that will not burn off contaminants in the oil. OMC and Volvo specified a 160* stat and your running temps should be between 160-175*.

Don't forget to coat the gasket on both sides with non hardening gasket sealer (OMC gasket sealer or Permatex Aviation Sealer). Coat the threads of the bolts too that way they will never seize in place.

thanks for that info, yeah she never gets up to 120 and I think that's because there was sand/rock particles holding the tstat open, the doggone kit I ordered is not right at all so I just ordered a new kit, I also need to replace this rascal cause it split on me

https://www.firstchoicemarine.com/p-567 ... 53255.aspx

I am a YUGE believer in anti-seize by Loctite, I'll coat those bolt threads in a jif

I dunno dudes, I got the new thrmstat and gaskets in, coated gaskets with permatex aviation non hardening sealer, and got her all back together, started her up via fake-a-lake and she's running at different temps, at different water pressures, and different RPMs so I don't know if I have a tstat leak or what

BUT it did occur to me that constant hose pressure doesn't exist on the lake, in fact, the amount of water getting sucked in by the impeller should be relative to RPMs so I will have to test on the lake to know for sure

Are you sure that's a 160 stat, looks like you're at 140. I will sometimes test them in a pot of water, if its not staying at the right temp. When I use an OE 160 stat, mine would run at 160 on the nose, steady on the water hose. When I test them in a pot of hot water I use an old fashioned radiator thermometer, that was used back when we did not have IR temp guns. I have found that on my V6, if I take a reading right under the Thermo housing with the engine running, its about 5-10* lower than the gauge reading. That's the closest reading anywhere on the engine that I get compared to the gauge. What range of temps are you seeing? When you installed the impeller, did you make sure that the o ring seal does not leak? That can allow it to suck in air.
BTW don't recall, is this a dog clutch Cobra with the impeller in the drive, or with the impeller on the engine, Volvo style? A '94 should be the Volvo style but a '94 boat could have a '93 drive....

I ordered from Amazon, the Sierra 18-3670 kit which says its 160, I did not test it though, as for the impeller, it's mounted on the side of the engine just below and to the side of the tstat housing

Ah then you have the joint venture product not the pure OMC with dog shifting. Lucky you easier to get parts for. Volvo SX parts should be the same. In the joint venture era with OMC Volvo even painted their engines the same color as OMC (charcoal). Earlier and later Volvos are red.
As long as it runs at least at 140 I would just run it. Try getting an IR temp gun and take readings right under the t stat housing and see what u get.....
