Anybody here still talk about their boats? Havent seen any recent postings on the 261. I'm in the process of rebuilding it, been having a blast! I need some gauge bazels if anybody knows where I can get some. They are Medallion bazels. Thanks for any input..........TERRI

Welcome! Post some pix of your project. There are a few 261 owners poking around here plus a TON of additional information. Just ask and we will help you find it!

Hey, cool 8)

Another Liberator!

Have you driven the boat and what engine/drives do you have?

What's a Medallion Bazel?

Regards,

I havent figured the picture thing out yet. I've had it about 4 months. It has the King Cobra outdrives with twin 460's. It rough inside but I have removed the bench seat and built another one from scratch. I just dropped it off to be upholstered with cool lighting bolts. The boat will be named Thunder Struck. The starboard engine has an engine mount that is broke thats the next project. I did get the portside engine to crank, been sitting around for about 3 years. I was happy about that. The hull is super clean. I'm also in the process of replacing all the gauges and steering wheel. The some of the bezels need replacing. Sorry that some of you had to really come down on the A instead of using the E in bEzel. I sometimes I dont proof read. Guess I should start. I'll figure out how to post pics soon.

You have your work cut out for you.

Check the engine mounts VERY carefully on both engines and get yourself an alignment tool for when you put them back in..

If you run either engine while it is even slightly out of alignment you'll destroy a coupler. (they are very scarce (to non-existent  )

What year is it?

If you don't have a service manual, you need to get an OEM manual. (Seloc and Chilton etc are good for lining the cat box)

I have a good King Cobra drive (from an 87 460 King Cobra) if it turns out you need one.
Here's what it looks like next to a Bravo

They are getting scarce too!

[I need to add also......that the 261 is a VERY cool boat! I would put Mercruiser 425hp 496 MAG HO Bravo III's in it!....... 8) I can dream can't I?]

Oh, also.....the easiest way to post pictures is to establish a "Photobucket" account or similar. upload your pictures there and then just post the links here. Very easy.

1990.

It's not electronic ignition is it? (you'll want it to be points type the electronic stuff is no longer available)

If it is points type then the engine/drives are probably 1989. (boat companies frequently use last years model engines)

If your drives do NOT look like the one I posted then it is indeed a 90. that means you have the early Cone clutch Cobra. that's good and bad. Good because they shift FAR better than the early Cobras. but still somewhat bad because some parts are simply not available.

You can fix the ignition on the engines if they don't work but you'll have to go back to a distributor. None of those modules are available any more unless you can find an old OMC dealer that has them sitting on the shelf.

I sincerely hope you didn't pay a lot for the boat. :(

I paid 5000. Hubby says he thinks it's electronic ignition. He says it has a distributor with a pick up. No points. Showed him the outdrive pic and he says ours looks bigger so I assume it's a 1990. What do you click on to post a pic?

Open an account with photobucket, it is free, and then you will be able upload pictures there. Once uploaded copy the link to the photo and paste in your reply.
