Hi Rick do you have a phone # or web site that looks like a good idea.

Good idea. I reduced the idle down and it seemed to lower the sound level as well. Unfortunately, I don't have access to a sound meter to know if I am in the ball park.

Well,
considering what a ticket costs, you might drop on over to RS and get yourself one...

They're only $49 and might save you a little money in the future.

Hey Guys,

Not a bad little meter. It does time averages with max and min readings during any set time period. Multiple ranges. Works real well. Thanks for the suggestion!

I cannot speak to the accuracy of the thing but I'm not sure the cops can either. The best you can do is try to verify that the Radio Shack meter reads about the "same" as the "cop" meter.

You will have to be at the same bearing and distance (as the "cop meter") from the boat too.

Rick I stoped by RS and picked one up, its raining out so I can't test it out right now but tomorow looks good, I also have the reading taken by the local sheriff and will see if it comes close when I take the boat out.
I can even test my Harley out imsure its noisey too. 8) 8)
Until we test Gregg out

Zephyrracer,

I will be curious to see what your readings are. I noticed that while at the dock, the readings are higher. In order to accurately duplicate what the local constables do, you may have to perform this out on the lake where you will not have as much "structure" channeling the sound.

birchfir I thought about that and was quirous if the boats readings would be higher before they warm up choke ect, so I will try it at the dock cold at the dock warm and out in the open water, almost sounded like the cat in the hat for a minute. Will keep ya posted

I ran across these from Hardin Marine. I have found them as cheap as 60.00 online, Hardin has them for $79.00 and that is per pair. Yes Per PAIR. So the 50 you paid for that meter could have almost paid for the mufflers on one engine.

http://www.hardin-marine.com/detail~ID~318.aspx

Of course you would have to buy two pairs, but $120.00 is cheap comparied to money wasted on tickets, and etc.

I have got Augers in my tubes on my 261 with the BBF. I am putting the Engines together right now, so in a couple more weeks I will find out how this beast runs........................

I ordered insert mufflers from Eddie Marine for $61/pair. I only need to get down 2-4 db in order to be legal. These are supposed to reduce by 6-8 db. I'll let you know what I end up at.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to everyone, but the inline mufflers from Eddie Marine seemed to do the trick! I had to re-pipe from the riser to the exhaust pip to fit them just in front of the transom exhaust pipe but once I got them in, it dropped the sound down by around 4-5 db. I had Johnny Law re-do the test and I peaked a couple of times at the max (86db) but didn't exceed.

Again, the mufflers were $61/pair at Eddie Marine. Man, I wouldn't want to be a boat mechanic for anything. It's hard enough getting to areas on top of the engines, let alone trying to get to anything below. There is still a rogue screwdriver down there somewhere!

Let me know if you have any questions. Even the neighbors could tell a little difference in noise. Didn't loose any rumble, must just be at a lower pitch.

I've had one of those for several years, mostly to check noise levels in my woodworking shop. Great little tool to have.
