So you can see in these pictures that I've got this garbage on my gel coat that polishing/waxing will not remove:

I believe this has built up as a result of my laziness/negligence in not wiping the boat down as religiously as I did in previous seasons. I've basically just failed to wipe it down after use since the 2012 season ended. I used to use a vinegar/water mixture and wipe it down every time and NEVER had this so I know who is to blame. When you run your hand over the gelcoat you can't really feel this stuff (it doesn't feel rough or like build-up or anything). It does NOT appear to be oxidation and seems to be more like a very fine film of scum.

I've got a Rockford 10" electric polisher buffer that l believe spins at 3,200 RPMS. I used that with a foam pad to apply the Meguiar's No. 45 Polish and it didn't even threaten this stuff.

So now, how to get rid of it?

Do I need to go to a more aggressive product like 3M Finesse It or something like a fine cut cleaner? I can't imagine I'd need to wet sand this stuff out.
Do I need equipment that is faster than mine RPM-wise? I've never operated a high-speed polisher and that seems difficult to me but I'd be willing to give it a go with some pointers (other than "don't hold it in one place too long or you'll burn the gelcoat-I know that one already).

Please help!!!!

Have you tried Yacht Brite Buff Magic ??

Image

I have used it successfully for years to remove oxidation, gel coat imperfections, and stains in the gel coat. It's not very abrasive, and will not hurt your gel coat. I would not buff at 3200 RPM however.

Buff Magic or Aqua Buff will clean that right up.

and a 10" grinder with a buff pad and a 10" variable speed buffer are two entirely different animals.. 3600 is WAY WAY WAY to fast.. i set my 10" @6-800rpm when i buff.. this eliminates burning in swirl marks or any unwanted damage.

Thanks for the quick answers. My buffer is variable in the following way: ON and OFF. Wondering if I should replace it? It is just what I could find at the local store and I'm not married to it or anything.

For the Buff Magic- machine application only or can I do it by hand and be equally effective?

BIO-CLEAN check out the website. Video show is true. It has got my white hull back to new looking. It removed the coffee stain from being docked for a month/6 weeks. At $10 bucks it's worth try.

Lysol toilet bowl cleaner gets the tanic acid staining off (brown stains) for around $3

+1 on Biokleen products. Try the Oxidation Remover. Make sure you follow the directions and always re-wax afterwards.

Paul, whatever happened with this?

With any buffer, the fastest you'd ever want to go (on boats or cars) is about 2,100rpm. Most of the time a range of ~800 to ~1,500 (depending on the pads & compounds being used) is appropriate.

Funny that it goes right up to the rubrail and not just below the waterline. As if it has been washed with something.

Maybe try some Lime Away and then a good waxing.

This is still in the same place as I never got to it last Fall. Hopefully I can get it worked out this Spring. I'll let you guys know once I get somewhere with it.

I'd start with the Star-Brite Instant hull cleaner as another posted, then a good buff with a mechanical buffer and a semi-aggressive compound, then a finishing polish followed by a healthy coat of wax.
