Post subject:  upholstery seams

On my "new" '99 H220, some of the seams in the upholstery are starting to come undone. The thread seems to be deteriorating. I've resown a couple of inch long spots, but as things age they wear out. Is there any glue-like product that can be applied to the seams to help keep them together?

I was wondering if low viscosity glue like super glue would seep down into the seams and help hold them?

You've got to restitch.

if you use gore tenara, it will never come undone again.

Unfortunately, gluing the seams would only attach the weak surface of the vinyl, where stitching attaches around the stronger reinforced backing of the vinyl. I don't think gluing would be any of benefit.

If it were an issue where the seam was coming apart due to the thread being pulled out, you could secure it with a few small dots of adhesive, but what it sounds like is that the thread is wearing (which it does, a lot of multi-directional motion will wear on thread) then you have no choice but to re-stitch. But - at least you do not have to re-upholster due to the thread being stronger than the vinyl.

Thanks. We restitched three short seams with standard upholstery thread. We had to do that on the H200, and it lasted a long time - until we decided to reupholster. Hopefully we won't have to do that for a few years on this boat. :-)
