Image
I had a seam rip open at a high stress area of my bench seat headrest.
Here is a picture after opening up the seam even farther to get some good thread revealed.

Image
I had found this technique on YouTube. First step was to open up
the seam far enough to get good thread to be able to tie onto.
I used a polyester thread. Exterior grade heavy duty thread from
a sewing supply. I've heard that gortex would be the #1 choice,
but I did not know where to get gortex thread.

Image
After getting my new thread tied onto the old thread, then using a
curved needle, it's a matter of threading under to the next hole,
then straight across, then under to the next hole on that side,
then straight across...

Image
Here's how it looks as I started to pull it tight.

Image
Finished product after completing the stitches and tying tight to the
original thread at the bottom (the hardest part), then using the
needle to pull the extra thread to the backside. I also pushed
the knot at the top to the backside of the vinyl.

Image
From a distance, it blends in reasonably well.
Looks pretty good for a 16 year old boat :D

Nice job! I've wondered how to do that.

Looks great Ray. I've done a few repairs to my canvas like that.

Mike, Lou, Catfish: Thank you.

Yesterday I noticed a seam on the rear bench seat that looks like the vinyl itself is getting ready to tear in a line next to the stitching. The vinyl stretches open more than a 1/16" when pulled on, but has not split wide open yet. Don't know how to fix that one. (it is where people step on the rear bench seat to board). Makes me wonder if a patch could be glued to the inside before it gets worse?
