Need to have the bottom paint refreshed. It has been thru 3 complete years in the water.
Barrier coat in good shape. Just want to have the anti-foul cleaned up and refreshed (couple new coats).
Anyone have cost estimates for having this done?
I am guessing $1500 but have nothing to really base it on other than the original cost to do the barrier coat and anti-foul 3 years ago.

Thanks

I refreshed my bottom paint last season with 1 fresh coat and just under 1 quart of paint.

Cleaned the bottom first and used a small roller to apply.

Took 30-40 minutes including prep and clean up.

Cost was about $100.

Cheers.

Probably depends on your area but if I remember last I had mine done it was around $25/foot. We are on fresh water so I only touch up in the spring. If you are on salt you need to repaint every year.
Also check on what type of paint for your area. Some paints work better than others in certain conditions. Also, if you are just touching up you want to make sure you use the same paint.

The only reason my boat has bottom paint is because the previous owner put it on.
Where I boat there is little to no need for bottom paint.

Same here, bottom paint was already done and it was a salt water boat. Once it's painted its a huge ordeal to go back to fiberglass.
A reason to use an epoxy barrier coat is to keep the hull from blistering in any water.
A reason to use an ablative is to keep the slime and anything else off the hull. You should only need to re-coat the ablative and never have to worry about the barrier coat. I got 5 years out of a coat with minor touch ups every year and it was still in decent shape when I sold it.
I have yet to paint the Regal we have had for a full season and it still looks okay with some touch ups needed this year.

I am on the Tennessee River.
The algae buildup is fairly bad here. And I leave my boat in the water year round.
When boat is clean w/ fresh paint I can average 2.1 mpg on a long run. 30 mph, 4000 rpm. I did this for the first 2.5 seasons.
At the end of last year it all of a sudden started dropping to 1.4 mpg average when I first start up and after about 5 miles of running it would come up to 1.6 mpg. 25 mph, 4000 rpm.
Almost as if it hit a threshold and could not wash off once up on plane.
Over a 100+ hour seasons for me equates to about 3000 miles of running. Yes, we use the boat a lot and take some 300 mile trips 2 to 3 times a year.
That would equate to:
1428 gallons of fuel at 2.1 mpg.
1875 gallons of fuel at 1.6 mpg.
At $3.86 a gallon at my fuel dock that equates to $1725 a year.
I can do the bottom paint every 3 years and save a bunch. Plus boat is more enjoyable, gets up on plane faster, gets to destination faster (sometimes that matters when your trying to beat the weather or darkness) and definitely looks better.

I am sure other rivers are different in their conditions.

Depends on use.
Like I said above, the more algae buildup, the worse your performance and fuel economy will be.

Good advice. It's around $25-30/foot around here either.

What if you don't know what type bottom paint is on it? I bought a used boat from colorado and brought to michigan where i slip it 6 months of the year. I would like to touch it up, but i have heard some paint are incompatible. I will be launching it soon, and don't want to restrip.

I would ask your marina what type is preferable in your area(some paints work better in certain water conditions). The instruction on the can may say if its good for all coverage. If not then contact the paint company to verify compatibility.
