Post subject:  Cleaning canvas?

My dealer did a small fiberglass repair job on my new boat and the black canvas has lots of fine white dust in it. Any idea on the best way to clean it thoroughly without shrinking it, fading it or losing the waterproof coating?

Thanks

How about one of those industrial huge dryers at the coin-op laundry? Just set it for no heat.

I just run my covers through the washing machine without any detergent or soap powder - just plain water - then hang them out in the sun to dry. This way they dont shrink and most of the waterproofing remains. Periodically you may want to re-waterproof if stored outside...

Did mine with the washer and very little detergennt (the liquid stuff)

Hung it and sprayed it with scotchguard. Better than new.

Great tips. Would not have thought of machine washing and the coating of scotchguard makes sense. Thanks!

I'd recommend 303 Fabric Protectant rather than Scotchguard.

Did mine at the laundrymat in the big industrial washer and brought home to dry. Once dry, 303 to protect.

Finally found where I got my information from when I cleaned mine...

http://www.sunbrella.com/ap/en/marine.pl then click on the "Care & Cleaning" tab and it gives heaps of details on looking after your canvas. They also recommend 303 water repellant.

I just spray down with garden hose, and when dry I also use 303!

I have several spots on my top from the previous owners that I just never bothered to clean. The sunbrella site says to use bleach. Has anyone tried this? I would be worried about it fading or changing the color of the fabric.

For tough grime/stains, you can also use Cascade powdered dishwasher soap. Safer on the color than bleach, but LOTS of cleaning power.

On my last boat, I used a pressure washer on the low setting to get out spots and stains then use protectant. Looks like new, and repels water like always. Think I may use the washer next time.
