I just ordered a Porter Cable 7424xp, anyone have any experience with it?

High quality oribital polisher that is good for applying wax but doesn't cut it when it comes to compounding (believe me, I know). I just bought this 7" variable speed polisher at Harbor Freight for $35 to compound my boat. I only plan on using it for compounding once a season so don't need the quality to be as high as the Porter Cable that I use for waxing.

I don't know the difference between the 7424 and the xp model, but the 7424 is generally considered the standard for orbital car & boat buffing. I wouldn't trade mine.

If I was going to buy a circular, I'd go with the Makita 9227.

The Makita would be a nice complement to the Porter Cable for compounding purposes but given you only use it maybe once a year, the $200+ price tag is tough to swallow (especially in this economy). For buffing purposes though, I agree that there is no cutting corners and the PC7424 is a must-have (or similar quality).

Have a 7424 & love it. Not sure what is different on the 7224xp but it probably isn't much.

I've used this Makita dual mode machine...it's a little pricey but keep in mind that it's both a rotary buffer and a random orbit polisher so you only have to have one machine....and in the rotary mode it oscillates in a random pattern so it's very easy to use without worrying about damaging the gelcoat...
