Can anyone suggest an effective product for surface rust removal. The new boat we are getting ready to get delivered is a "salty" and we boat in fresh water, but...there is some superficial surface rust on various screws, bolts, engine mounting brackets etc....generally I want to remove and clean all these surfaces, and after checking on the replacement costs of these bolts ($300) as quoted by a VP parts dealer...I am going to do this on my own. I would like to remove all the rust, clean, then I will re-paint the items in black (possibly rust-o-lium) Wondering if anyone can provide advice. Thanks

For various large & small hardware, you might need more than one approach depending on the piece. For many things like stainless, chrome, bronze, and even clear plastics, Autosol has been all the rave lately among tool collectors/restorers (those guys are religious about rust removal/protection). I've never used it but will have some delivered tomorrow.

Here's an example of one guy's experience with Autosol (this is ductile cast iron though):

I've also used Flitz on stainless and it works well. Some parts might turn out better using some very mild abrasive. I can recommend the Sandflex Hand Block in fine grit:

It's like a stiff rubber block with tiny abrasive particles. As you rub the item, it wears away.
