Are the Jl MX650's really noticeably different than my Infinity 612m's? Will they mount in the same holes I've got, or with major mods? I've got a new Arc amp that pushs the Infinity's pretty good, but just wondering about the JL's. Found them online for $144.45/pair with free shipping and thinking about 6 new ones if it was that much of a difference.

Well they are close on the power and handling. The JL you are looking at are a decent speaker. As for comparing the total DB between the 2 wight eh same power feed from your amp that is a simple application of hooking them up. being that i have not had the 2 speakers next to each other for a real world comparison as most have not. You have to go off of the specs and what real world experience we have..

first they will fir in your cutouts.
as for SQ (sound quality) I prefer the driver output of the JL drivers over the Infinities that i have felt with over the years.
if you have 6 speakers now and the same amp out put the JL will be about the same DB output as they are very close in DB output. I feel that the JL will push a little more than the Infinitys from my past experiences.

Now if you are trying to throw the sound to the beach i can recommend an alternate tower or stern speaker. If you are wanting to mask the water and engine noise with clean audio then the JL should do the trick.

I am extremely happy with my Polk mm651um which is a 100w rms 200Max where the JL is a 60rms speaker. And is can tell you this REAL WORLD that my 4 Polks are much louder than by buddies boat with 6 of the JLs. FOOD FOR THOUGHT.

the JL does a good job of supplying a good UV grill that protects the cone. but in the end of the day PERSONAL OPINION (opinions are like ass holes everyone has one) the Polks are well worth the extra $$ over the JL if your goal is a clean crisp audio in the boat.

Ended up sticking with the Infinity's and added two more for a total of eight now. Two on stern, four in cockpit, and two in bow. What a huge difference the Arc amp and extra speakers made. I'd match them in a blind test any day against Polk's or JL's now......

I had a Kicker 700 watt amp prior to this Arc XDI805 and it blows the Kicker out the water. I got a 3 year warranty and it is made for the high heat out here in the desert at Lake Mead where in the summer everyday is well over a 100. Uses half the energy than my Kicker did which makes for longer battery charges, and does great on 115 degree days and the amp is installed behind the dash in the bow storage compartment. Besides the eight speakers, my subwoofer came alive and I can hear it for the first time!

Will that clarion amp be enough for polks mm651? Thanks! Also does anyone have links to pages explaining how to wire amps/speakers/subs having some trouble figuring out how to wrap my head around 2ohm 4ohm wiring

it will be ok. will not be a blasting powerhouse like my amps.. but it will be a lot louder than the HU pre amp.

for starters the Polks are 4ohm speakers so that is how you want them wired. and this would mean you are feeding 50w @100% load on amp to speakers that prefer to operate around 100w. not this does not mean you cannot run them lower but they performance will not be near the same as mine that are getting access to 180w each when they desire. This also means that i can run more efficient power use from my amps as they are running at a much lower total % than this mentioned Clarion that you will be pushing to 75-100% a majority of the time. Amp efficiency is key with heat, power draw, and sound quality..

My pioneer has a misfit 50x4 HU preamp and it is not satisfactory for the polks while wind and under cruising speeds i had to be +75% of the HU volume to hear the music. Now with dedicated amps i am 10-15% volume while cruising and 45-55% when in party mode not he hook and at this volume it will make your ears ring if standing in the cockpit.

If it was me i would supply more power to the polks than that clarion

* The MM's are just under 3Ohm, so will have a larger load on your amp.
Any head unit will only be capable of <20WRMS. 50w x 4 is PMPO (marketing sh11te).
