Just bought a Standard Horizon GX1270s, now trying to figure out where to mount it and the antenna. Have a 6db on an L bracket mount coming. I would love to see pics of where you put yours.

Here's a pic from when I just finished the new deck job on my old '88 back in '07...you can see my Standard Horizon hiding on the extreme right side of the dash....I now have a Garmin 441S on top of the dash, got rid of that bracket that was stuck on the dash by the previous owner for the old Humminbird fishfinder. In that spot I put a gas vapor detector (highly recommended for any inboard boat). The Standard Horizon and GPS unit are connected so the radio knows the position, if you have to make an emergency call to the Coast Guard you just push the panic button...
The antenna is on the starboard side, you can see it in the starboard side window. BTW, get a stainless mount because the plastic ones break sooner or later, esp with a long antenna.

That is the same model of standard horizon I have. I ended up placing it on the side next to the speaker as there was no surface area to put it in under the dash. I then drilled the hole for the antenna and put the mic holder on just to the right of the steering wheel. Pictures forhcoming.

Pictures as promised

Antenna has an "O" ring on either side, and the top secured with marine silicone.

Hole for this was very easy to drill using a step drill - Just put masking tape down first, then mark your hole and have at it.

Image
Kind of lazy - but I used the L bracket as a backing for it underneath.

My '08 H180 has a nice fuse block right under the the helm. Very easy to just add the connectors and plug in. I used the unused accessory fuse spot, and hooked it up.

blue dragon, why did you put the antenna at the opposite corner? Seems like a lot of extra wiring effort, so there must be a win.

I just wanted to avoid any interference with the GPS.

Blue I love how you integrated the Garmin in the dash...
They also caution about putting a GPS too close to the compass, but my Garmin is close to the VHF antenna and my compass and so far no worries. The one time I had to get towed last year, it was great to be able to read the GPS coordinates off the VHF screen.

Unfortunately - due to the bulk of the radio I could not mount it directly under the console as I would have preferred. I do like the new Standard Horizons with integrated GPS - I have my eyes looking for a deal - but could not bypass the one I got, it was a smoking deal - and brand new!

That standard horizon is linked via nema 183 to the garmin, thats where it gets its GPS coordinates from. I have two holes in the dash from where the cubby mounted before. I still need to get two bungs to fill them.

Same radio I put in the Vista. I had enough panel in the dash to mount it directly in there. Makes a great VHF radio, and attractive. I did run the NMEA 0183 in & out of the radio from the chartplotter, and got a free MMSI number registration, so I'm set in case of emergency. The NMEA functions are fun; it also feeds my amateur radio for use with APRS.
I love the radio also because it's quite smart; when I change to channel 69 it reads, "PLEASURE". Go figure.

Who says tech guys don't have a sense of humor lol.
My question is why they use such small wires for the interface between the gps and the radio. Normally I crimp connections but these were so small I wound up soldering them.
