Hi all

just about to get new VHF radio installed in a vista 248 (along with lots of other stuff) ...the Garmin VHF 300 AIS (which has a separate black box and speaker )
https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/digital/on ... 28725.html

have any of you got this in a vista, and where did you put it ? was thinking inside where all the electrics are , or would you mount it somewhere under the wheel for ease of use when underway .?
It has to also connect up to the new NMEA 2000 network ..

any help appreciated !

thanks

Mount it recessed in the dash, to left or right of wheel. Mounted in the cabin makes no sense, how would you
stay at the helm and call for help if it was in the cabin ???

Thanks for the picture...It's not that kind of radio..it's a black box and speaker with a separate handset .
I was wondering where the most space and easiest cable runs would be ..all near the dash, or mount the electronics where the electrical panel is and speaker and handset on the dash ..it comes with a 10 metre cable ...

Mine is in the cabin, and is a pain in the backside because as pointed out, if you need to use it then you need to abandon the helm and go to the radio!
I did look at getting one like the one you linked. If i did, then i would mount the electrics in the cabin as you said. Warmer, less moisture etc.
If you've a 10m cable you should have enough to go from there, through the mid-cabin (on same side - in my 238 there's an access hole to where cables etc. are run) and up through the other access hole to the engine bay, then across the mid-cabin-engine bay bulkhead, and up into the other void where throttle cables etc. are run, and finally to the dash. That's the way i'd do it, if you follow!

You can install the black box anywhere. The make cables to extend the distance. I also believe that you can install more that one handset, but I could be wrong. I definitely would NOT install the handset it in the cabin. Safety come first.

I take it that you have a GPS that can read the AIS output. Yes??

You should not have a problem, its very straight forward. What stinks is that the "Tees" take up a lot of room, so plan ahead and room to grow.
