Anyone added a 3rd pair of speakers in a 2007 era Horizon? The sound is really lacking back on the bench seat, so I'm considering adding a 3rd pair of 6.5's. Just wondering if anyone has done it, where you mounted them?

Another, somewhat related, question... Where to the port side speaker wires run from the starboard side? I'm assuming they go up around the bow, but just curious before I dive in there.

Thanks!

This thread may provide some ideas:

although I don't see an answer to where the speaker wires cross over to the port side. I would guess there is a passage under the floor.

I put a third pair in the side pocket with them rear facing. They sound good for the bench seat and also help throw sound up over the sunpad when we are anchored. I also put in the Kicker's with the LED's so at night it lights up the pockets and gives off a cool glow. Photos linked below to the finished product.

Awesome! How are you splitting the power between the 3 pairs of speakers?

The amp I am running has 2 separate channels for speakers. I have the bow speakers on the first channel and all 4 rear speakers wired into the 2nd channel. This way I was able to turn down the front speakers a little and control the rear 4 speakers on the same level. My amp also runs the sub on a 3rd channel so I don't have to run a separate sub amp.

Do you have the 2nd channel in bridged mode to supply adequate power to the 4 rear speakers?

Shouldn't be bridged, typically that would be for sub. If he has 2 sets(speakers)in parallel (on the second channel) it will deliver approx twice the power than the first channel. If all 6.5's are 4 ohm... the 2nd channel would have a 2 ohm load which would be the same power to each of th 6.5's, with the first channel having a 4 ohm load.... if that makes any sense....

What is your amp stable to, 1,2,or 4 ohms?

Ahh, that makes sense. I forgot to consider the ohm load dropping when running multiple pairs on a single channel.

The ideal setup would be an external 4 chnl amp, thats all thats needed for 3 pair. An even better option, would a 6 chnl amp and each speaker gets its own chnl.

6 channel amps are super expensive. I looked!

Comparing a 4 chnl and and 6 chnl of equivalent build quality and 4 and 2 ohm wattage from one brand, the 6 chnl comes to $91 per chnl and the 4 chnl comes out to $112 per chnl. From another, the 4 chnl is $117 p/chnl and 6 chnl is $96 p/chnl. In both cases, there is a net reduction on wattage to the speakers paired up on a 4 chnl compared to the net wattage to each speaker running on its own chnl on a 6 chnl.

Does a 6 chnl cost more? sure. Are their benefits? yep. Wattage as noted, 4 ohm discrete v's 2 ohm paired can = better sound quality in some cases and the amp runs more conservative. Does this offset the cost? Thats up to the buyer once they have the info.

There are cheap amps that are cheap, there are top shelf amps for big money and then there are good values. Make sure you compare more than just advertised wattage.

If you don't mind me asking, what brand/models were you looking at?

The first two brands that came to mind that I new offered a 4 and a 4 in the same series, so to keep it apples to apples, was Wet Sounds and JL.

Wet sounds HTX-4 and HTX06
JL M400.4 and M600.6

The other advantage of going with a 6 chnl or a 5 chnl, is the ability to come in later and add a sub woofer without installing another amp and more power cabling. Simply wire the speaker leads from the woofer to amp. A little more investment upfront, but you save it on the back end.

Thanks for the info! Curious how you'd wire three pairs of speakers along with a sub on a 6 channel amp?

Livin' The Dream quoted it exactly right. I had to ensure the ohm rating on the speakers was correct for the amp knowing I was adding an additional pair and going to run the rears in parallel. Additional channels would be ideal, but this amp pushes more than enough power and is almost deafening with the deck turned about half way up. The sound quality is great and having one compact amp was ideal for my 21' boat.
