I am looking to add an amp and subwoofer to my factory Clarion head unit and speakers on my 2005 H230. I originally was thinking this would involve some cutting (which I was not thrilled about) to install a sub near the helm (this is where they put it on the factory upgrade). A buddy of mine suggested I look into a sub that is mounted in a box which can then be stored under seats or somewhere out of the way. No cutting! As my friend said to me--people mount these in their trunks all the time--there is really no need to have the grill exposed and pointing into the cockpit. I like this idea a lot. How have others done with this approach? Are you happy with it? Any suggestions on a brand or model? I have seen marine grade box subs from both Kicker and Poly Planar. Any suggestions or advice is appreciated. Thanks.

In my opinion, the BEST scenario is to go with a custom made box your your specific sub, location and musical taste. I have never known anyone to really be satisfied with an off the shelf box/sub combo. Some on the forum have built their own, others have cut them into their boats, and in my case, I had my boxes built.

Do a search, you will find a lot. Here is my boat: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=3051

Have fun...good luck!

I'd rather cut the hole. The 230/240 has a ton of storage space, but no boat has enough. I just can't see taking up any of it with a speaker when it isn't necessary. But, that's me.

I built my own (sprayed with rattle can truck bed liner) that fits under the starboard rear bench. It's a tight fit, but that's what I was going for. It pounds pretty hard. Not nearly as hard as Steve's (aguyindallas) setup (which is insane by the way), but I'm happy with it. BTW, I built it to fire down, in hopes that it wouldn't make the rear seat rattle to much, but it kind of does, especially since it's a more powerfull driver, I'm still working on a solution for that. End of last summer it was a towel, between the seat frame and the seat.

Here's the thread where I both drilled holes for speakers and made a sub box to go under the sunsprt seating rear bench:

Glad I went back to find it, all the img links needed to be updated.

As you can see, fitting the available space is one reason for building your own.
