Post subject:  AIS/VHF antenna question

I recently purchased a Standard Horizon Matrix AIS GX2150 VHF radio with a Shakespeare 5396 AIS 4' Galaxy Antenna. My question is if I would need a separate VHF only designated antenna? Or do both the VHF and AIS features run off of this Shakespeare 5396?

If I do need a separate antenna, any opinions on type, quality, height/size? It will be used for Lake Erie boating only. Mostly within 5 miles of land. But can't rule out longer journeys of 20+ miles. Would you mount the 4' antenna on top of the radar arch for better receiving/sending?

Also, any thoughts on installing a Cellular antenna? Does anyone on the forum use one?

Thanks!

The fact that all the Matrix VHF/AIS models allow you to use the single VHF antenna you’ve already installed to support both VHF and AIS makes them even more attractive for retrofitters.

Thanks for the find Fire. Looks like a quality 8' VHF would be suitable for me.

Still, any opinions out there on the Cellular antenna setup?

Thanks

Remember PT Barnum's quote about a sucker born every minute? Pretty sure I'm one of them!

When I put the GX2150 in my basket at the GpsStore, it recommended the 4' AIS antenna. Thinking I would keep up with the game, I got that too. Guess Barnum was right.
