Had a great day of boating and on the way home at 31mph struck a submirged log.very loud hit but every thing felt good, raised the drive looked at the props all was good.I put the boat back up on plane and drove 10 miles home and put her in her slip everything felt great.A hour later my dock mate noticed my boat listing and sitting low in water and bilge running.we got on the boat and it was sinking, forward bilge not working,we grabbed a sump pump threw it in the bilge and saved the engine, quickly pulled the boat and saw the damage.Transom housing is cracked in half.the two large ears are gone off the drive and upper yoke is broke in half, and still drove fine.

Lucky no one was hurt!
Do you have any pictures of the damage?
I hope you're insured?!

OMG you guys were very lucky!
That's going to be a BIG job, pull engine, replace outer transom plate and pivot housing. There could also be damage to the front end of the lower unit.

I probably need to contact my insurance company and re-read my policy, but I am pretty sure I don't have a "collision" policy on my boat, just comprehensive. I pay a couple hundred $ per year (which seems cheap to me). Do typical policies cover things like this? Do I need to change my coverage to be covered in the event of an incident like this? Just wondering what type of policies others have.

Usually insurance policies do cover impacts with underwater obstructions but its good to check. Other things to check:
The limits of liability, for personal injury etc.
The clean up of gas and oil if the boat sinks--this can be extremely costly if the boat sinks and the EPA gets involved.

Thanks Lou. I have Erie Insurance's "Boat Protector Policy". I will email my agent and ask these questions. I am pretty sure my liability coverage is good; I knew that was important, but I should definitely revisit the issue. When I took out the policy, I was just buying a boat for the first time and I probably was a little distracted by all of the other things I needed to get set-up (like buying a towing vehicle, boating gear, water sports gear, etc...).

Also this is why, I say all boats even small ones should have:
2-1100 GPH bilge pumps
2-Batteries, gp 24 or 27 if you can fit them.
The fact that they sell boats that cost 40-55K with a single 500 gph is laughable.
