I was talking to the Volvo guy at the Newport R.I. boat show 2 yrs ago. I aked that question, what if the get ripped off.

He was saying that there made to break away and the seal should hold. Now I really don't know, but thats what he said. I love the joystick idea. I boater at the club has one and to make the boat move sideway it a touch is something to see.

Juk! That boat would sure look better with a swim platform where those noisy outboards are.
(well that's my opinion)

Yet another example of how outboards would be better (not cheaper though)...
The OB will kick up but not as likely have hull damage.
In fact even regular outdrives would have been better IF you knew in time that you had to trim way up.

I bottomed out once and that was the only time I appreciated having IOs. The outdrives kicked up and only damage was to the props and that collar that shears to protect the gears. I never did like the design of those pods.

There are indeed benefits and drawbacks to each drive system. The first time I saw a pod drive though, all I could think was that this is a recipe for disaster. Looks like that was an accurate assumption. They're probably fine on an ocean boat, but I'd never put that on a lake. Not even a lake I'm familiar with. Even in the ocean, I'd imagine that a pod could be easily ripped off with a tangle in a cable. It's not like an azipod on an ocean liner. One would have to try REAL hard to rip something like that off, and even then, the ocean liner has sealable compartments where they attach. Perhaps if small craft builders would build in waterproof compartments open on top way above the waterline around anything with a pod drive, it would be much better.

As far as cruisers go, I think the 370 Venture is perfect. Look at the inside pictures of that beast, the aft cabin is monstrous.

Yes I really like that boat, it minimizes the drawbacks of OBs and then you still have the advantages, which in a small cruiser like that are very significant. More space, easier maintenance, safer, etc. If Merc is giving us hi tech sterndrives, (moving away from simple and inexpensive GM engines) then for me there is no point to a sterndrive any longer. Might as well have the OB advantages in that case....because.....you leave alu in salt water it still can corrode...you use the EPA approved anti fouling paint....it does not work....etc....
When I look at the stern of an OB boat....it does not look ugly....it makes me think....well my back will not hurt because I don't have to pull out seats and crawl around the bilge to winterize that boat...lol.....its an oil change, lower unit change (all done standing up BTW) and that's about it.
