...and for fixing my bent skeg from two seasons ago (viewtopic.php?f=2&t=9377&hilit=prop#p90196). This was the first time I had the drive off, so we checked the gimbal bearing and everything looked good.

Anyway, the mechanic goes, I want to show you something. This part with splines is joining the lower and upper drive is supposed to break if you hit something. In my case, I just managed to twist the hell out of it.

Got it replaced, drive looks like new. Ran the boat off the muffs and everything worked great

Wow I guess it sis what it was supposed to do. So the driveshaft from the upper to the lower gear units is a 2 piece design with the splined section designed to give way to protect the expensive lower unit.... I have heard about this but never saw one. Glad it worked!

I'm glad it didn't break entirely, I would have need to be towed in :mrgreen: , but yes, its good to know that its there.
