Hello, driving tomorrow to pick up a new boat t us. It is a 1991 four wins freedom with iron duke 18'. The boat is in really nice shape. The guy is doing a remodel on his house and needs some cash. I figured 4500.00 isn' a bad deal. He has all the paperwork on it.
What is the iron duke.
Do these boats have hour meters.
Anything I should look for on this boat.

Crazy kids have all moved now the wife decides she wants a boat. I figured I would go small and heaper first. If we like it in a couple years. Upgrade. The weather here in Washington has been in the 100's for the last 7 days and the 10 day forecast calls for over 100 every day. LOL
Thanks for any input.

You can look for an hour meter mounted on the engine, on the dash or somewhere on the transom. Not all boats have them.

Well, now that you've bought it... Prior to buying I would check the floors. Any soft or spongy spots indicate rot. IT can be an easy... or more than likely a tough fix. Make sure engine runs, oil in drive and engine is not milky after being in the water, and that there are no leaks.

What part of Washington are you from? I see you bought the boat in Woodland.

The motor in the boat is not actually the "Iron Duke". The Iron Duke was never used in a marine application.

The 3 liter (181 ci) version of 153 cu in 4 cylinder GM Motor and the Iron Duke were not the same engine.

The motor in your boat is likely the 3 liter. A good reliable engine. It will be attached to an OMC Cobra drive. From a design and durability standpoint the OMC is a good unit. Unfortunately, the drive has been out of production for 20+ years so it is getting harder to find some parts and service. Most typical service parts are available.

According to NADA Guides, the average retail on a 1991 Freedom with trailer is:
170 Freedom (17') with 3.0L: $2850
190 Freedom (20') with 3.0L: $3600
(They didn't show an 18')

I hope it's in really nice condition for that price... but if it is, you should be fine. Seems like for $4500 you could have found one about 7-10 years newer.

I took it to mean you bought it already.

The guy wants $100 just to take it for a sea trial. That's BS. That's "I am going to charge an insane amount, and the buyer won't find out it does not run/has issues until it is too late."
