Our 2000 H180 had 148 hours when we bought it last summer and we sold it with 184. Our 2000 Cobalt 246 had 319 hours when we bought it and are somewhere in the 340s now.

We're at 25 hours in 33 days. Brand new boat and we are trying to make the most of it!

I checked the GPS and found we have just over 400 hours since the start of the 2012 season. Add at least 363 hours on the hour meter when we bought it in October 2011, plus I think it has a few more hours where the meter was not connected. I'm reasonably sure the boat is at 800+ total hours. The GPS shows just over 5000 miles since May 2012, and 1150+ miles this year. Tonight will be 26 nights on board this season. Not bad for Minnesota. ...

Our meter reads about 880 hours on the 2004 H230, but only about 100 of that is ours.

I am averaging about 50 or 60 hours a season now. we are up to nearly 550 on the hour meter. I think that is adequate use and I would never have an issue with buying a boat with higher hours as long as the engine compression is good and the hull passes inspection.

Current boat has 400 hours, about 80 hours up on when I purchased it a year ago. Previous boat we did nearly 600 hours on it and it is still running well on our local lake!

Our Ski coach has over 1200 hours on his 2014 Malibu....

Mine is unknown, but if I estimate about 30 hrs/season over 28 seasons worth, that's about about 840 about half of which is raw water cooled in salt water.
1000-1500 raw water cooled in salt is considered good, some make it to 2000.
With closed cooling, good maintenance of the exhaust system and proper propping, an inboard or I/O can reach 3000-4000.
Some of the CG boats use 4 stroke Honda outboards I've heard that they run them to 4000-5000 hrs.

The best three things you can do:
proper prop
maintain the cooling system
maintain the exhaust system

I/O or inboard engine failures are usually a result of one of or a combination of these factors.

I don't think that raw salt water cooling limits the life of an I/O or inboard as measured in hours. (Years may be a different story). For example, if an I/O was used commercially for 800 hours per year, it would have no trouble going 4-5 years regardless of salt vs fresh water use.
