Engine Hours

It's been a while since we compared who has how many engine hours so it might be fun to see who's got what these day's. Also how do you view your engine hours: As a cause for celebration for each+100 you get OR time to trade it in before you get too many hours point of view?

We celebrated 600 hr's today

We plan to keep this boat for a long time so we look forward to seeing how many hours we can squeeze out of this engine with good maintenance.

Edit: We purchased the boat in 2010 with 125hrs on the meter and doubled it our first season

I'm a little slow. :wink:

Boat had 120 when I got it and I read 270 this weekend.

Good for you Bliss36. That is what the boat is for, to use and have fun with. Thanks again for your website pictures and videos.

I am sure mine is reading very close to that 600 mark also, or a little higher. My hour meter is mounted on the engine so its a little harder to see. For comparison, my truck just turned 1000 hours and has 35,000 miles. While the boat engine works harder at cruise, most boats don't wear out an engine due to hours of use. Last year we had 37 nights onboard. We are at 24 nights so far this year. Traveling the Mississippi and St. Croix rivers near Minneapolis, we usually put 40 to 100 miles on the boat in a weekend. A week ago it was 150 miles. During the week after July 4th we put 475 miles on it.

Congrats on that milestone! We're at 422 now...picked her up with 298. She's running better than ever and no cause for concern. You know me...she'll be traded off before hours become an issue!

We've got about 595 after today. Pretty low for an '84. We bought her with about 400 hours 4 years ago.

Just turned over 370 but with our style of boating I should add in genny hours. Of course I plan to add more next time we visit your area!

We are coming up on 450. Last year was not a good year for cruising but trying to make up for it this year.

Congrats on 600. Glad to see you were out this past weekend. Keep clocking hours!

I'm only putting on about 80 hrs/year. I wish it were at least twice that much since we boat year-round here. I think I'm a little under 600 hours right now.

I would be happy to celebrate 1500 hours...that wouldn't concern me at all. I get more concerned about age than hours.

Knowing that I have close to 4000 hours on my 6.0 chevy truck I have no concern about my measly 230 hours on the boat. I actually get excited when we hit milestones but we don't take too many long trips. it's usually a short trip and anchor for the whole day. Or stay at the dock and take the dinghy for rides.

I look at engine hours in more than the actual hours.. you need to look at the year of the boat and the condition.. I would much rather buy a 20year old boat with 1,000 hours than a 20 year old boat with 250 hours. this being said i know that the 1,000 hour boat was consistently used and maintained. NOW yes you have increased maintenance issues with higher hours but little or no hours can mean that ht boat sits a lot and was neglected and this more so than not is WORSE than the higher hours. LOOK at engine hours like this..My truck has 200k miles and close to 7,000 operation hours. now those hours are why cruise and idling int he winter to warm up.. boats tend to stay in a steady RPM range for more consistent operation use and this is good. SO for me to go and look at lets say a 2000 boat with a 350 and it has 800hrs i will look at the hull and condition as a huge indicator of how the boat was maintained over its life.

DAD had extremely high hours on a 1989 yamaha outboard and it was a champ until it started loosing compression in one cyl at a few thousand hours. it was not a work boat it was a family boat that was used year around meticulously maintained and serviced. we still have the motor int he shop and it will get a new set of rings and some machining and continue to power something in the future.

my point is that you have to look at use maintenance and hours in combination with each other.. low hours is not always a good thing on used older boats as it can mean neglect..

We have 76 hours since buying the boat brand new at the end of June last year. Looking forward to HUNDREDS more!

I am jealous of all you guys with hour meters! That was one of the options that the original owners decided not to go with. I know that in 3 years we have put 902 miles on the chart plotter...

This is an easy addition with something like a Tiny Tach. One wire to a ground and the other wraps around a spark plug wire. That's it... You obviously won't know how many hours have been put on but you will know going forward. I keep one velcro'd to my 9.9 which is VERY handy for rpms and running hours.

One might guess that you have about 125 hours when you figure some of that is cruising speed, but add lots of no-wake speed and idling to the mix. You could buy an a basic hour meter for your engine compartment... connect it to the battery for 5 days to catch up, then connect it to the ignition circuit for future hours.
