I have a lift as well. I always turn off the breaker before leaving the dock. Never thought about lightning hitting it, but more of the possibility that kids could mess with it. You can buy limit switches to stop the lift at the top, but most people don't have them, and the limit switches can fail as well. We knew one guy with limit switches who would activate the lift then go inside instead of waiting for it... well, his boat eventually went through the dock roof! Also if you buy one, it is twice as fast if you don't have to compound the cable with bottom pulleys. Mine goes twice as fast as the neighbors. This also means you need a bigger worm drive/motor.

Here's a shot of mine on our lift. I love it. When we're in the dock we leave the boat in the water but still on the lift which provides a nice step onto it. We can run our AC while we're still on the lift. Keeps the bottom clean and also makes it easy to rinse off and clean when we finish up for the weekend.
