I use a snap lock pin to secure the hitch pin on the road. If installed correctly there's no way it will ever "fall off".
Not sure if it's true but I was told by a local fireman that it's "illegal to use a lock when transporting over the road". Reason being is if there is an emergency where the trailer must be disconnected in a hurry, there's no need to locate a key. It makes sense to me.
I use a lock only to secure and prevent theft when parked.
